The Boston area is known for the successful rock acts it's produced, such as the Cars, Aerosmith, and the J. Geils Band, but there's more to the local scene. In fact, the Northeast funk surge of the 80's owes some of its beat to a core of Boston based independent producers and performers. New Edition, The Energetics (now Planet Patrol), Maurice Starr, Michael Jonzun, and Arthur Baker all hail from the Boston Area, and they created a competitive local dance music scene in the late 1970's. Tony Rose, President and architect of Boston-based Solid Platinum Productions has now joined the ranks of Boston ghetto graduates who have garnered national attention and sales. Rose and his premiere Solid Platinum act, Prince Charles and the City Beat Band, have been together five years. They first established themselves as a major European act via heavy touring and a production and publishing deal with Virgin Records & Publishing.
The group recently signed a domestic deal with Atlantic Records. The label has just released a single entitled "Skintight Tina," and in an unusual move for a relatively new, untried domestic black artist with a major label, a video is available as well. Rose's contract with Atlantic calls for a one album option with a window of up to six albums at the labels discretion. Skintight Tina is a re-mix of a track from Charles's "Combat Zone" album, previously available on Virgin outside the U.S.
Prior to the Atlantic signing, Solid Platinum, since Prince Charles's 1979 debut, has released domestic product independently from its Boston-base. The only exception was one 12-inch on the CBS distributed pavilion label in 1981.
In 1982, Rose negotiated a deal with Neil Coopers's cassette only Reach Out International records (ROIR) label. The label released a compilation tape, "Stone Killers" which Rose claims has sold 3000 copies.
Solid Platinum signed the Virgin deal for Prince Charles product outside the U.S. in 1983, Rose retained ownership and production rights. Live performances around Europe gained the band a devoted cult following. They have reportedly sold 250,000 albums throughout the continent, 50,000 in Germany alone. Their European success led Duran Duran to have them open their dates at Madison Square Garden last fall.

Having grown up in the housing projects on Whittier Street in Roxbury, Rose moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the music industry. His successes included positions at Burbank Studios (Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures), in the accounting and sales division at Warner/Electra/Atlantic Records (WEA), as an account representative at Warren Lanier Public Relations and as an A&R representative at RCA Records. It was his deep industry connections that served as a critical catalyst for the emergence of the Boston Black Music Scene in the late 1970's that paved the way for artists like Prince Charles and the City Beat Band, Maurice Starr, The Jonzun Crew, New Edition and eventually New Kids on the Block.
In 1977 , Rose came back to Boston for a visit and ran into his childhood friend Lawrence "Larry Woo" Wedgeworth who took him to see a group called the Energetics at Roscoe's Lounge on Northhampton Street, according to Rose, "things started to click from that point on". (Rose) With his New York and Los Angeles contacts and industry experience, Rose began to connect Boston's urban talent with national distribution deals. The first act to benefit was the Energetics themselves. Mr. Rose provided the connections that eventually led the band to a record deal on Atlantic Records in 1978 and their first full length release "Come Down to Earth".
PAGE 6. - Significantly, that group would later be renamed Planet Patrol and appear on the Tommy Boy release "Planet Rock", as well as their own Tommy Boy release "Play At Your Own Risk". For this contribution alone, Mr. Rose deserves a central place in the story connecting Boston's 1970's Black Music Scene to the birth of Rap Music a few years later. However his contributions did not end there. To provide a legal outlet for the talent Rose founded the label Solid Platinum Records. It's first release was the 7:11 synth funk workout, "In the Streets" (1979) by Prince Charles and the City Beat Band. The song became a hit in the New England nightclubs and the band quickly followed up in 1980 with their full length record "Gang War". Although the record almost entirely focused on the bands incendiary synthesizer driven funk sound, the tune "Tight Jeans" contained a short rap by the bands leader Prince Charles Alexander. According to Rose (Rose) , this was the first rap ever committed to record by a Boston Artist. In 1983 the label would release Boston's first proper Rap 12" "Sweat it Off" by Kevin Fleetwood and the Cadillacs of Sound.

Boston is not known for its hip hop. The city does not have the rap pedigree of New York or L.A., and local emcees continue to lament the lack of local radio and venues that cater to their music. Still, the 35-year narrative of hip hop in the Hub is interesting. It’s a story that includes trash cans burning on the Common, police threatening rap groups with lawsuits, and a guy named Magnus. We took a look back at some of the events that shaped the arc of Boston hip hop, from Skippy White to Michael Christmas.

Record store owner Skippy White received the city’s first shipment of the seminal Sugar Hill Gang record Rapper’s Delight. White agreed to take 50 of the records without hearing the song; he made the order based solely on the recommendation of a record company executive who said the record was selling well in New York City.
“I got them on a Tuesday and by Wednesday or Thursday I had sold all of them,’’ says White. “It just exploded. Everybody I played it for loved it.’’
In 1979, White ran his store on 1763 Washington St. in the South End. White is still in the business; his current record store is located at 1971 Columbus Ave.
1983 Sweat it Off
The earliest Boston rap release is believed to be Kevin Fleetwood and the Cadillacs of Sound’s 1983 record “Sweat it Off,’’ according to UMass Boston professor Pacey Foster, who has chronicled the history of Boston hip hop. Roxbury native Tony Rose, who grew up in the Whittier Street housing projects, produced the track. Rose would go on to head an Arizona-based publishing company that specializes in self-help books for African-Americans.

Boston funk flautist Charles Alexander leads the City Beat Band through eight long Gap Band-styled party grooves on Stone Killers (released first in America on cassette and then in England on vinyl). The music is infectious and unassailably danceable; the semi-rap lyrics vary from juvenile and bnoxious — "Big Chested Girls" — to simplistic and funny — "Cash (Cash Money)." Combat Zone is a more ambitious LP. Several real songs mix an aggressive blend of Mayfield/Chicago soul and modern stylings; elsewhere, Alexander parties hearty and even tries a notable scratch-funk revision of "Jailhouse Rock."

Prince Charles & The City Beat Band were a Boston based Funk outfit. They released their first LP "Gang War" in 1980. This was followed by two other releases, "Stone Killers" in 1982 and "Combat Zone" in 1984. They released four 12" singles which saw little success in the USA but had club hits in Europe with the tracks "Cash (Cash Money)" and "Beat the Bush". These tracks feature deep sub-woofer shaking bass, P-Funk influenced grooves, Lyricon synth laden treble and funky Catfish Collins style guitar. 2. EARLY LIFE
Rose was born in Roxbury (Boston), Massachusetts and raised in the Whittier Street Housing Projects where he lived with his mother and sister. In Rose’s book, “The Autobiography of an American Ghetto Boy", he described his childhood as a violent and chaotic experience. Rose was able to propel out the ghetto and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force after serving in the Vietnam War. He attended the University of Massachusetts, the University of California in Los Angeles and the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, MA. Early in his career, he was employed as a production assistant at the Burbank Studios (Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures), in the accounting and sales division at Warner/Electra/Atlantic Records (WEA), an accounts representative at Warren Lanier Public Relations and as an A&R representative at RCA Records, Los Angeles, California."THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN AMERICAN GHETTO BOY" BY TONY ROSE
